The Rietvlei Experience ¾ Anthony Maskell
Take a well-deserved break, come and take a much closer look at the beautiful fauna and flora to be found within the boundaries of this gem of open space in Centurion, so close to home! The Rietvlei Dam accounts for 27% of the Pretoria metro pole’s water resources and the Rietvlei Nature Reserve is one of the world’s largest urban Nature Reserves. Rietvlei is home to about 8 kilometres of natural Wetlands. Visiting the Nature Reserve one can find routes, such as Gwarrie Route, where you see only the surrounding landscape with game browsing; no signs of urban development around. It feels as if you are deep in the Bushveld, within some large Game Park, not so close to home… You are able to really feel close to Nature when you work on the Reserve with the Friends on one of the Work Projects; inquisitive Zebra might wonder close by; Rhinos may view you from a distance; the occasional Jackal will call its mate; the call of the Fish Eagle; maybe a total treat seeing the Buffalo herd come out of the reeds!!!
